Film Review: Starship Troopers

The main plot of Starship Troopers is human against aliens and the quest to destroy them to save humanity. The film is based on a novel named Starship Troopers written by Robert Anson Heinlein (1907 - 1988). It's directed by Paul Verhoeven and produced by Jon Davison and Alan Marshall. The story is exciting the whole way through consisting of great action and computer animation of the alien bugs. It's a great film for people who like violence, because there are heaps and heaps of killing and slaughter both human and aliens in the film.
Main characters are played by Casper Van Dien as Johnny Rico, Dina Meyer as Dizzy Flores, Denis Richards as Carmen Ibanez, Kjake Busey as Ace Levy and Nel Patrick Harris as Carl Jenkins. The story starts off with Johnny, Dizzy, Carmen and Carl preparing to graduate from their high school and deciding on their future. Johnny's girl friend Dizzy and best friend Carl chose their path to become a citizen (people who volunteer for Federal Service). Carmen wanted to become a pilot, Carl (who has a strong psychic power) wanted to in the military intelligence and Johnny was going on with further study's. Because Johnny wanted to impress Carmen, he disobeyed his parents and enrolled in Mobile Infantry to serve the Federation against the alien bugs. Mobile Infantry are the first line of defence the Earth has against the alien bugs which also mean that they are 'bug foods'.
In the first half of the movie it shows us the involvement Johnny had in the boot camp, the training, he maturity and others things. When Johnny arrived at the boot camp, an unexpected visitor, Dizzy, joined in the camp. Dizzy was Johnny's high school friend who had a crush on him and still does. During his training Johnny received a CD-ROM from Carmen that they should break up because they don't see each other any more and that she wants to concentrate and become the best pilot there is. Johnny became so depressed because the primarily support for his presence at the boot camp was gone. But the realisation of Earth being attack by alien and destroying his hometown, steered Johnny back on track. Soon enough, he was sent to war against the alien bugs which none of them had experience and hardly any knowledge on what they are about to face. So many mobile infantries were slaughtered as the result of it, and Johnny nearly died by saving his friends. Then the story goes on and on until they finally worked out that the are 'brain bugs' working behind those other powerful dumb aliens. So they journey through the quest to destroy the brain bugs. By now Johnny becomes a highly regarded commander and Carmen becomes a Starship pilot and Carl becomes a high-ranking officer. Finally they found the brain bug, caught it and did further study's on it which ends the story. Giving us the idea that, if they know the brain bug well enough, they will find ways to defeat the rest of the alien bugs.
In the film, although it's sci-fi, some parts are still very unbelievable. In one case, Johnny was ordered to search out a command station which been out of contact. So Johnny arrives at the scene finding everyone dead except for the commander of the station, who cowardly hid himself. Then a large swarm of alien bugs invades the vicinity with Johnny and a team of not more than 20 to defend it against thousands of bugs. One curious thing is that the bugs only attacked from one side of the station and how could Johnny and his team fends off such numbers of vicious bugs? Director Verhoeven also added sections of the film, which could be avoid because it's just so pointless. One particular scene struck to mind is the showering in the boot camp. Both males and females use the same shower room, showing nudity within the film and giving us the idea that people in the future are can control their sexually so easily. Another part is the end of the story where Carl and his crew further examines the brain bug. He showed one member using a large drill, shoving it into the poor defenceless brain bugs mouth and censoring it. I think he showed the painfulness of the brain bug in order to compensate the thousands who have died during the movie. But it didn't work, so he left behind the stupidness he created, and to be absorbed by the viewer as the final memorable scene.
As I've said, Starship troopers are for people who love violence and action. It's also for people who love hi-tech state of the art graphics and don't really mind the story. I love action but I also love stories, because this film only has one of those elements, which was action, so I gave it a 6.5/10.
